Before You Board: 3 Language Tips for Your Next Trip to Europe

You’ve booked the flight. Packed the sunscreen. But have you packed a few words in the local language?

Here’s a short checklist to help you feel a little more local, without hours of study.

1. Learn the words you’ll actually use

Skip the textbook lists.
Focus on the phrases that match your plans: ordering coffee, asking for directions, greeting your host.

If you’re headed to Italy, “Posso avere un cappuccino?” goes much further than “Il gatto è nero.”
In France, a simple “Bonjour, ça va ?” opens more doors than you’d think.

Tip: Think about your first 24 hours of the trip — airport, café, check-in, dinner. Jot down the 10 phrases you’ll need most.

2. Listen before you speak

A few minutes of listening helps your brain catch the rhythm of the language.
Try short clips, local radio, or even a travel vlog in Spanish, French, or Italian.

You’ll notice patterns — and confidence builds naturally once your ear adjusts.

Bonus: Listen to the same phrase twice — once fast, once slow. You’ll hear how melody carries meaning.

3. Practice out loud (yes, really)

Saying words aloud, even quietly to yourself, helps your mouth remember what your brain forgets.
Try greeting your mirror in the morning, or rehearsing how you’ll order at dinner.

It’s not about sounding perfect. It’s about sounding human.
